Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users using these medications must be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened regain.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Users who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful return of cravings.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you become ravenous," described one woman.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success relies on combined behavioural management.
